Victory at ACF Fall (and some musings about the year thus far)

The atmosphere was surprisingly relaxed at the University of Ottawa on November 8th, 2014 at 6 pm, despite the ongoing events. Colonel By’s A Team (Ted Gan, Cameron Amini, Isaac Cowan, and myself, Anubhav Srivastava) had torn through the entire tournament bracket except for the University of Toronto’s A Team. There were finals that day, but no one was particularly surprised by the result. Colonel By had just won a university-level tournament, and by a fair margin as well. Despite this result being expected, it is nevertheless an extraordinary achievement for all of us. Taking home those trophies was exhilarating (though I was far more fascinated by the copious amounts of bubble wrap used in their packaging). The more surprising news came today when we were ranked 7th internationally off of that tournament, the highest standing for a Canadian team. Ever. However, we must continue to train hard and become better quizbowl players if we are to retain that position.

The quizbowl club is exceptionally large this year. At the interest meeting, I thought “maybe a handful out of these players are decent”, but I have been proven wrong. The juniors this year are at least as strong as we were in our junior years. It appears that Colonel By’s golden year is in fact a golden age and is here to stay; I am extremely proud to be able to say those words.

Study hard CB,

Anubhav Srivastava
